Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must be 18 years or older. Priority will be given to WGA members in good standing, as well as to actively working writers. Applicants must have a strong desire to improve representation of Jews on screen.
What are the program dates?
We are still finalizing the program dates, but anticipate starting in late April and running through late June, with pitch sessions in July. Sessions will be held weekly during M-Th in the evening Pacific time.
Is it guaranteed that my project will be sold at the end of the collective?
We are providing the opportunity for participants to pitch their projects to an independent film fund. We do not guarantee that any project will be sold. Similarly, the financiers may choose to back more than one project.
Are the funders WGA signatories?
Yes, the funders are WGA signatories and will adhere to standard script rates for any potential acquisition.
What makes a project “Jewish?”
We hope you’ll discover the answer to this through the workshop! But for the purposes of this collective, a “Jewish” project is a narrative that either includes Jewish characters or settings. The “engine” of your project need not be exclusively Jewish; in fact, throughout the program, we will encourage writers to conceive of ways to integrate Jewish characters and identities into “mainstream” worlds.
I have multiple projects that could be a fit. Can I apply with multiple pitches?
No, you may only apply with one project. We recommended selecting the project that you believe has the most legs to tell a proud, authentic, Jewish story. However, since the program is an idea generation workshop, it is possible that you will develop another idea you are more excited about within the course of the program. You will be permitted to pitch any Jewish concept even if it is not the one listed on your application, but you will only have the opportunity to workshop one idea at a time and in the pitch preparation workshop.
What formats are acceptable?
The financiers are interested in scripted television and feature film projects. They may select to option or purchase a script, as well as to produce a spec pilot or low budget feature.
Will there be any professional development resources available to me upon completion of the program?
We hope participants will continue to use the tools they learn during the workshop to consistently develop work that is grounded in Jewish values and Jewish pride. JITC Hollywood Bureau has a range of trained sensitivity consultants across Jewish backgrounds that can be an added resource for you. We will also continue to engage program alumni through group chats and possible gatherings, as we understand the importance of building a supportive writing community. We may list program participants on our website, in press materials, and communications with studios and other partners; however we will not act as a representative to shop your project or any future projects beyond the initial pitch with the financiers.
Who will retain rights to my work?
You will retain rights to your work unless they are purchased by the financier in a separate agreement. Please view our full submission release here.
